Friday Night at the Movies
Saw
We Live in Public tonight with
he_who_wanders and
factitiouslj. It's a one-week-only engagement at the E Street theatre, and if you're at all interested in the Internet, social networking, privacy issues, or just documentaries about people of questionable sanity, I highly recommend it.
I found the subject interesting in and of itself, but I was surprised by how much I appreciated the filmmaking choices, too. In particular, there's one piece of footage shown at both the beginning and end of the movie. It's the only piece where the time stamps are left visible in the upper right of the frame, and what they show is that the clip, which seems more or less coherent, actually jumps forward and back in time, skipping sections and stringing originally unconnected words together. It's a good reminder that, despite what one person says during the movie, lack of privacy doesn't mean lack of secrets. The filmmaker chose her thesis and narrative, and we'll never know what she left on the cutting room floor in the process of building them.
